One of the major health concerns throughout the world is obesity. As part of wellness actions many dietary programs are being promoted. Diet recommendations from health and fitness experts abound, and wellness exercises are constantly being pushed. However, obesity is still a growing problem.

Various studies have been conducted about the causes of obesity. Biologically, in many cases it appears to have a connection with the metabolism of the body or cased of hypothyroidism. Although there are corresponding alternatives and available medical interventions, still these are not sufficient to settle the main problem…how to stop obesity?

Health and wellness research reveals that pregnant women are strongly involved in the health condition of their expected babies. This means that babies born to obese mothers have greater potential risks of turning into obese children and adults. As a result there is a cycle of biological obesity which remains no matter how far and wide a health and wellness campaign reaches, unless this issue is addressed.

However, an important recent study by the Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) at San Antonio and the National Institute of Nutrition in Mexico City has found remarkable solution to this obesity cycle. They strongly recommend that obese mothers should strive to lose fat before they become pregnant. Their research indicates that such a change has a significant positive impact on their babies.

The study demonstrates that by changing the obese mothers' diets before pregnancy the level of leptin hormone increases, which tells the brain to reduce appetite. Although the role of leptin is not direct, it peaks naturally after the baby is born. This increase will influence the development of the brain’s hypothalamic appetite control centers. In effect, the cycle of obesity can be finally reversed.

Of course, the research findings alone do not mean that obese pregnant mothers will change their behaviors. What can be done to encourage pregnant mothers to reduce their weight? This is where wellness programs that focus on taking action and sustaining that action can be a great help. The VRCities Wellness Initiative has been designed to do exactly that. This initiative provides a complete support system that emphasizes immediate action and continuing action.
